The filmmaker’s legendary fast-paced production schedule compressed an entire Italy-set wedding drama into less than a week.
Tyler Perry’s reputation for lightning-fast production schedules held true once again with “Why Did I Get Married Again,” the third installment in his acclaimed romantic drama series. According to TheGrio, cast members Sharon Leal, Tasha Smith, and Taraji P. Henson discussed the compressed filming timeline in interviews, revealing that Perry completed the entire shoot in just four days while filming at an Italian destination wedding location.
Tasha Smith, who appeared in both previous films in the franchise, was struck by how much the production schedule had accelerated over the years. She noted that when the original “Why Did I Get Married?” was filmed, the cast had roughly three weeks to complete their scenes. The contrast with the recent production was stark—Smith described the four-day shoot as “insane,” while her co-star Sharon Leal characterized the experience as “refined insanity.”
Smith attributed Perry’s ability to work at such a rapid pace to his technical mastery and clear creative vision. According to TheGrio’s reporting, Smith explained that Perry knows precisely what he wants to capture, understands his equipment and resources completely, and operates with a system refined through years of filmmaking. For Smith, this was her first time experiencing Perry’s accelerated process after a decade-long gap since their last collaboration.
Taraji P. Henson, who has worked with Perry on multiple projects including “I Can Do Bad All By Myself” and “The Family That Preys,” noted that his shooting timelines have grown even tighter in recent years. Her work on “Acrimony” and “Straw” were completed in five and four days respectively, establishing a pattern of ultra-efficient production.
Sharon Leal, returning to the franchise for the first time since the 2010 sequel, acknowledged that the rapid-fire shooting process felt unfamiliar but recognized the trust required to work at such a pace with an experienced filmmaker. The film, which reunites the ensemble cast for a lavish Italian wedding setting where relationship secrets threaten to surface, is now available on Netflix.
Tyler Perry has built a prolific career as a filmmaker, director, and producer, known for his ability to maintain high output while managing multiple television and film projects simultaneously. His production company, Tyler Perry Studios, operates with systems designed for efficiency without sacrificing quality.
