An unusual incident unfolded on a busy Georgetown thoroughfare Friday afternoon when a bucket containing a loaded firearm fell from a moving vehicle, according to reporting from Kaieteur News citing police statements.

The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. at the intersection of Durban and John Streets. A police rank stationed in the area witnessed the bucket drop from the vehicle and strike the roadway. As passing traffic continued to move through the intersection, vehicles struck the bucket, which eventually revealed its dangerous contents.

Upon observing what appeared to be a firearm on the street, the officer took immediate possession of the weapon. Preliminary police investigations confirmed it was a .38 revolver loaded with five live rounds—a potentially hazardous discovery in a public area where pedestrians and motorists regularly pass through.

The recovered weapon was subsequently transported to Albertown Police Station for safekeeping and further investigation. Police have not yet disclosed details about the vehicle from which the bucket fell or whether any charges have been laid in connection with the incident.

Georgetown experiences regular traffic along Durban Street, a major commercial and transportation corridor in the capital. The recovery of loaded firearms in public spaces remains a concern for law enforcement in Guyana.

Gun violence and illegal firearms remain pressing public safety challenges across the Caribbean region, including Guyana. Incidents involving unsecured weapons in public spaces underscore broader concerns about firearm regulation and community safety in the territory.
