JUTC Launches Route 710 to Boost Domestic Tourism in Portland Parish

New bus service from Port Antonio to Kingston draws over 500 registrations and promises to energize local travel patterns.

The Jamaica Urban Transit Company marked a significant milestone on Wednesday with the opening of Route 710, a new direct bus service linking Port Antonio to Kingston. The launch event at Port Antonio Square drew commuters, stakeholders, and Transport Minister Daryl Vaz, signaling strong institutional support for the expansion into Jamaica’s northeastern parish.

According to the Jamaica Observer, JUTC Managing Director Owen Ellington highlighted the exceptional level of community enthusiasm surrounding the new route. He noted that the Port Antonio service has generated more interest than any previous rural route launch, with over 500 residents already registering for smart cards to access the buses. This early uptake suggests genuine demand for improved connectivity between the parish and the capital.

Ellington addressed concerns that the JUTC might undercut existing minibus and public passenger vehicle operators who have long served Portland residents. He assured stakeholders that the company views the new route as complementary rather than competitive, aiming to expand the overall transport market and bring additional business to local townships rather than displace established operators.

The JUTC leadership pointed to emerging patterns on other rural routes as evidence of the service’s potential impact. Ellington reported that Friday and Saturday morning runs to Ocho Rios, initially scheduled with single buses, have expanded to accommodate five to seven buses on peak mornings. This surge reflects what the company describes as a new wave of internal commuting and domestic travel sparked by improved JUTC connectivity. Officials believe Route 710 will similarly catalyze significant movement within Portland Parish and attract visitors exploring the region.

The JUTC has been expanding its rural service network in recent years, moving beyond its traditional urban Kingston operations. These expansions have demonstrated growing demand for reliable, scheduled bus service connecting parishes to the capital and between regional towns, suggesting opportunities for both commuter travel and tourism-related movement.

This development reflects Jamaica’s ongoing efforts to strengthen domestic transportation infrastructure and encourage internal tourism, a priority for Caribbean economies seeking to distribute tourism benefits beyond resort areas. Improved connectivity between rural parishes and urban centers can support local economic development and reduce reliance on private vehicle travel.
