Canadian Chef Sentenced for Operating Deadly Online Poison Business

Kenneth Law pleaded guilty to aiding 14 suicides after selling lethal substances to vulnerable people across 41 countries.

Kenneth Law, a former chef at a luxury Toronto hotel, stood before an Ontario court Wednesday as relatives of his victims described the devastating toll of his online poison business. According to the Jamaica Observer’s reporting of the sentencing hearing in Newmarket, Law pleaded guilty in May to aiding in the suicide of 14 people in Canada after prosecutors determined murder charges could not be sustained.

The 60-year-old admitted to actively recruiting customers on suicide discussion forums under assumed names and making lethal substances available for purchase. Court documents revealed that Law shipped material containing dangerous concentrations of sodium nitrite—a meat preservative—to buyers in at least 41 countries, typically charging about $80 per package. The United Kingdom alone received 330 such shipments.

During Wednesday’s hearing, family members delivered wrenching accounts of their loss. Maria Lopez, mother of 18-year-old Jeshennia Bedoya-Lopez who died in 2022, told the court: “I cannot stop thinking that my little girl will never come back.” Other relatives spoke of how Law’s actions robbed their loved ones of the chance to receive help and healing. Judge Michelle Fuerst allocated four days to hear victim impact statements before determining the sentence.

Prosecutors are seeking a prison term of up to 20 years, according to legal experts cited by the Jamaica Observer. Law has claimed in prison interviews that he viewed himself as providing a humanitarian service, telling a psychiatrist: “I was just trying to serve a need that I thought was humane.” However, grieving families have expressed anger that Law will not face murder charges, arguing he bears direct responsibility for the deaths of mostly young, vulnerable people who needed mental health support rather than access to poison.

Law launched his online suicide forums during the Covid-19 pandemic after leaving his position at the downtown Toronto hotel. His arrest came in 2023, and the case has drawn international attention as details emerged of his global operation spanning multiple continents.

Kenneth Law operated his poison business primarily through online forums during the Covid-19 pandemic, after leaving his employment as a chef at a luxury hotel in Toronto. He was arrested in 2023 and pleaded guilty in May 2026 to aiding in 14 suicides in Canada, though prosecutors determined they lacked sufficient evidence to pursue murder convictions.
