Jamaica’s rum heritage took center stage on October 15 when industry leaders and colleagues gathered to honor Dr. Joy Spence’s remarkable 45-year tenure with J Wray & Nephew Limited. The JOY45 celebration, held at the Oriental Gardens on the University of the West Indies Mona campus, brought together a carefully orchestrated evening that blended culinary artistry with the spirit of Jamaica’s most celebrated rum brand.

Chef Jacqui Tyson and her From Thought To Finish team designed a menu that journeyed through Jamaican geography and flavor. The opening course, titled "Summer in the Valley ‘Braes River’," featured a delicate composition of St. Elizabeth watermelon, baby greens, citrus, and goat cheese on a crunchy cloud, finished with lime vinaigrette and paired with an Appleton Estate Signature Stormy Valley cocktail. The main course, "Balaclava to Bluefields – Land and Sea," presented grilled beef tenderloin alongside seared salmon fillet, accompanied by golden potato croquettes and a pineapple-ginger jus, paired with an Appleton Estate 8-year-old Brown Sugar Daiquiri.

The celebration continued with a dessert course aptly named "The Master Blend," featuring warm rum and raisin bread pudding alongside a citrus crème brûlée-topped cheesecake. The evening concluded with Jamaican handcrafted dark chocolate shards paired with Appleton Estate 21-Year-Old Rum, a fitting tribute to Spence’s mastery of the blending craft.

Guests including Deputy Master Blender David Morrison, West Indies Rums & Spirits Producers Association Chairman Clement "Jimmy" Lawrence, and industry figures Brett Wong and Peta-Gaye Simpson raised toasts honoring Spence’s pioneering contributions to Appleton Estate and the broader Caribbean rum industry. The event’s décor and execution were handled by Main Event Entertainment Group Ltd, creating an atmosphere befitting the recognition of one of the region’s most influential spirits professionals.

Dr. Joy Spence has served as master blender at Appleton Estate, Jamaica’s historic rum producer and part of J Wray & Nephew Limited, for 45 years. Her work has established her as a pioneering figure in rum production and blending within the Caribbean spirits industry.

This celebration underscores Jamaica’s global standing in premium rum production and highlights the contributions of Caribbean professionals to the island’s heritage industries. Dr. Spence’s career represents the excellence and innovation that define Jamaica’s rum sector, a cornerstone of the nation’s cultural and economic identity.
