Barbados is facing economic headwinds as growth momentum slowed considerably in the opening three-quarters of 2026. Central Bank Governor Dr Kevin Greenidge disclosed the figures on Wednesday, revealing that the island’s gross domestic product expanded by just 1.4 per cent through September, a sharp pullback from 2.3 per cent growth over the equivalent nine-month stretch in 2025.
The deceleration reflects mounting pressures across key sectors. Tourism activity has weakened during the period, a concerning development for an economy heavily reliant on visitor arrivals and related spending. Simultaneously, the labour market has softened, with unemployment climbing from 6.1 per cent to 6.6 per cent on a year-on-year basis through June.
Other economic indicators present a mixed picture. Inflation remained relatively modest at 1.5 per cent as of July, while the island maintained international reserves of $2.8 billion. However, public debt remained elevated at 93.6 per cent of GDP, underscoring the fiscal challenges facing policymakers.
The Central Bank has also adjusted its outlook downward, lowering its economic growth forecast for the full year 2026 in light of the weaker-than-expected performance to date.
Barbados has worked in recent years to stabilise its economy following earlier fiscal challenges. The island’s tourism sector remains a critical driver of economic activity and employment, making it particularly vulnerable to shifts in visitor demand and global travel patterns.
As a major Caribbean economy and a leader in regional financial stability efforts, Barbados’ economic performance signals broader trends affecting the wider Caribbean region. Slowing growth and rising unemployment in Barbados may reflect challenges facing other tourism-dependent island economies across the Caribbean.
