Messi Expands Spanish Football Empire with Eldense Acquisition

The Inter Miami star becomes owner of second lower-league club in Spain.

Lionel Messi has officially completed his purchase of Eldense, a Spanish second-division club located inland from Alicante, the club announced Thursday. The move represents the Argentine legend’s second foray into Spanish football ownership, following his April acquisition of Cornella, situated near Barcelona.

Founded in 1921, Eldense released a statement confirming Messi’s ownership, noting the club would “embark on this new chapter with the ambition to consolidate their position and grow in professional football.” The 39-year-old, an eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, continues to balance his ownership interests with his playing commitments.

Messi has been based in Miami since 2023, where he plays for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer. According to media reports, his contract with the MLS club includes a shareholder provision that will take effect once he retires from professional play. The timing of the Eldense acquisition comes shortly after Messi announced his retirement from international football in late August, following Argentina’s defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final.

Messi’s entry into club ownership reflects a broader trend among elite athletes seeking investment opportunities beyond their playing careers. His dual acquisitions in Spanish football suggest a strategic focus on the country where he spent much of his career at Barcelona.
