A 16-year-old has been charged with assault following an incident in Denham Town where a 31-year-old man sustained severe burns.

A Kingston teenager faces assault charges following a violent incident during a protest in Denham Town that left a man with serious burn injuries. According to Jamaica Observer, the 16-year-old student was apprehended on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, and charged with assault occasioning grievous bodily harm.

The incident occurred around 9:00 am at the intersection of Nelson and Metcalf streets in West Kingston. Reports indicate the 31-year-old victim was walking past protesters when he became involved in a dispute with a female. Authorities allege that an alleged gang member instructed the teenager to set the man ablaze, after which gasoline was poured on him and he was set on fire.

The injured man fled the scene and sought police assistance, who transported him to hospital where he was admitted in stable condition. He sustained burn injuries across his face, left shoulder, both arms and back, and remains hospitalized receiving treatment.

This is the second charge laid in connection with the incident. Earlier in the week, 36-year-old Omarley Dennie, also known as ‘Neily Blacks’ and accused of being a member of the One A Way gang, was charged in relation to the burning.

The incident occurred during a protest at a major intersection in Denham Town, a community in West Kingston that has experienced significant gang-related violence in recent years.
