House of SDM Distributes Over $2.5 Million in Educational Grants to 150 Kingston Students

Philanthropic initiative provides textbooks and scholarships as families prepare for new school year.

The House of SDM marked the start of the academic year by presenting educational grants to approximately 150 children from across Kingston, St Andrew, and St Catherine at a ceremony held at the National Baptist Full Gospel Church in Kingston 13. According to the Jamaica Observer, the initiative represents a combined programme value of $2.5 million benefiting 154 students in total.

Sheldon Millington, the chairman and founder of House of SDM, explained that the grants were designed to ease the financial burden families face when preparing children for school. The programme included the purchase of textbooks from students’ required reading lists for 150 recipients, alongside a newly introduced scholarship component developed in association with the YVT Foundation. Four students entering high school each received $35,000 in scholarship support.

Millington, who grew up in the Whitfield Town area of Kingston and experienced poverty firsthand, emphasized that education serves as a transformative tool for breaking cycles of disadvantage. He noted that the selection process prioritized children and families facing the greatest financial hardship, ensuring support reached those most in need of assistance to begin the school year with confidence.

The philanthropist traced his commitment to community service back to his own childhood, when he shared his limited resources with neighbours and schoolmates. During his school years, Millington organized fundraising activities and established support committees to help peers lacking lunch money. His charitable work has continued into adulthood through various community initiatives.

Beyond the educational grants, Millington has undertaken several other philanthropic efforts in recent months. Following Hurricane Melissa in November, he distributed relief supplies including groceries to residents of Amity in western Westmoreland. He subsequently organized Christmas treats for senior citizens in Whitfield Town and arranged a New Year’s Day celebration for children in the Rae Town community.

Millington described his approach to philanthropy as rooted in love, compassion, and service to vulnerable community members. He emphasized that the House of SDM’s work reflects a commitment to empowering those facing disadvantage through education, mentorship, and sustained community support.

The House of SDM is a charitable organization founded by Sheldon Millington, a corporate executive from Jamaica. The organization focuses on educational support and community development initiatives, particularly targeting vulnerable populations in Kingston and surrounding parishes. The educational grants programme represents an expansion of the organization’s efforts, introducing a formal scholarship component in partnership with the YVT Foundation.

This story reflects the vital role of private philanthropy in addressing educational access challenges across Jamaica and the Caribbean, where many families struggle to afford school supplies and fees. The initiative demonstrates how individual commitment to community uplift can complement public education systems in supporting vulnerable youth.
