The U.S. president has requested a nine-meter monument and five-year display at the National Museum of American History as part of his ongoing critique of the institution.
U.S. President Donald Trump has formally petitioned the Smithsonian Institution to install a nine-meter statue of George Washington and establish a multi-year exhibition celebrating the founding father at the National Museum of American History in Washington, according to Diario Libre.
The request represents Trump’s latest effort to reshape the Smithsonian’s approach to American history. Trump has publicly criticized the institution, which operates 21 museums and galleries, for what he views as a systematic reframing of the nation’s past through the lens of race and gender. A 162-page White House report, as cited by Diario Libre, alleged that Smithsonian leadership has “systematically denigrated and displaced white people, men, Christians, and Americans” in educational materials and programming.
Trump’s proposal includes a colossal statue of Washington and a three-meter Washington monument from the August IndyCar Freedom 250 race, which he wants displayed in the museum’s Hall of Flags. The exhibition would run for five years, concluding on February 22, 2032—marking the 300th anniversary of Washington’s birth.
In a statement on his Truth Social platform, Trump emphasized Washington’s historical significance, noting that “without him, our country and our freedoms would not exist.” He further argued that during the nation’s 250th anniversary year, the museum has failed to provide the founding fathers with appropriate recognition.
The Smithsonian was established by the federal government in 1846 but operates with institutional independence from any branch of government, giving it considerable autonomy over its curatorial decisions and programming.
