Barbados clinches dramatic WCPL win at Kensington Oval after opening-round loss.
Barbados Tridents Women showed resilience and composure to edge Jamaica Empress by three runs in a tightly contested Women’s Caribbean Premier League encounter at Kensington Oval on Saturday. The victory proved crucial for the three-time defending champions, who had suffered a 21-run defeat in their opening match against Trinbago Knight Riders.
Batting first after winning the toss, the Tridents constructed a competitive total of 140 for seven from their 20 overs. The innings featured a crucial 78-run partnership between Maddy Green and Suzie Bates for the fifth wicket, with Green contributing 39 runs from 36 deliveries and Bates finishing unbeaten on 39 from 28 balls. Captain Hayley Matthews added 21 to the total before her dismissal in the 10th over, while the Tridents lost three wickets in the final over, including Green’s departure.
Jamaica’s reply began promisingly, with the Empress cruising to 62 without loss at the end of the powerplay. An opening partnership of 104 runs between Amy Hunter and Meg Lanning kept Jamaica on course, but the dismissal of Lanning for 57 in the 18th over proved the turning point. With two overs remaining and needing just ten runs, Jamaica’s momentum evaporated as Cherry-Ann Fraser restricted them to three runs in the 19th over while dismissing Chinelle Henry.
Qiana Joseph delivered a decisive final over for the Tridents, conceding just one run per delivery to hold Jamaica to 137 for four and secure the three-run victory. Suzie Bates earned player-of-the-match honours, combining her unbeaten batting performance with one wicket for 18 runs. The result lifted Barbados to third place in the four-team standings, while Jamaica slipped to fourth behind leaders Trinidad and Tobago Knight Riders and second-placed Guyana Amazon Warriors.
The Women’s Caribbean Premier League is being contested at Kensington Oval this season, featuring four teams competing in a round-robin format. Barbados Tridents have won the title three consecutive times heading into this tournament.
This match represents Barbados’ performance in the premier regional women’s cricket competition, showcasing the island’s continued strength in Caribbean women’s cricket and the competitive depth of the WCPL.
