A UK coroner has concluded that three British sisters who drowned off the coast of Brighton in May died by suicide, according to reporting from AFP. The bodies of Jane Adetoro, 36, Christina Walters, 32, and Rebecca Walters, 31, were recovered from the sea in the early hours of May 13 during windy weather.
Coroner Penelope Schofield determined at Thursday’s inquest that all three women had intended to end their lives. The sisters, who shared a flat in London, had arrived in Brighton late in the evening by pre-booked taxi and were last spotted alive on the beach around 3:00 am. They entered the water in darkness when sea conditions were particularly hazardous, despite none of them being able to swim.
The coroner noted that the women "lived very secluded lives" but acknowledged the circumstances surrounding their decision remain unclear. "We don’t know why they took this course of action or indeed why they chose to do it in Brighton," Schofield stated. Police investigations found no evidence of criminality, and the women had not visited any local businesses or entertainment venues during their time in the city.
According to court testimony, the three sisters had travelled to the Brighton area one day after visiting the location where their mother had taken her own life in a lake 16 years earlier. This detail emerged as part of the inquest proceedings, though the precise connection between the two events was not elaborated upon by the coroner.
The case highlights the tragic circumstances surrounding three women whose lives ended in the waters off Brighton, a coastal city in southern England. The inquest proceedings, which concluded in October 2026, brought to light details about the sisters’ isolated lifestyle and the historical tragedy involving their mother’s death by drowning.
