St Kitts PM Drew Confirms Stroke, Reports Strong Recovery Progress

Prime Minister Terrance Drew says he is healing well after suffering a vertebral artery dissection in late August.

St Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew publicly disclosed his recent health crisis on Sunday, revealing that he had experienced a stroke in late August. According to the Jamaica Observer, the 49-year-old prime minister, who is himself a medical practitioner, provided detailed information about his condition and recovery trajectory in an eight-minute broadcast to his nation.

Drew’s health episode began with symptoms including nausea, dizziness, and balance problems, leading to his admission to Joseph N. France General Hospital in Martinique on August 30. After initial treatment, he was transferred to Florida on September 2 for more comprehensive medical evaluation and analysis.

The prime minister explained that medical testing revealed his stroke was caused by a dissection of the vertebral artery, one of the major blood vessels at the back of the brain. Despite the seriousness of the condition, Drew emphasized that the effects have been well-managed, noting that he retains full mobility, clear speech, and intact cognitive function.

In his address, Drew expressed gratitude to medical professionals and those who offered prayers and support during his recovery. He reported that rehabilitation efforts, including occupational therapy and other therapeutic interventions, are progressing exceptionally well. The prime minister stated that his mental, psychological, and physical condition are improving faster than the severity of his condition might suggest.

Drew’s disclosure comes after weeks of speculation about his health status. He indicated that he has already left the hospital and is continuing his recovery through outpatient rehabilitation, positioning himself to resume full duties in the coming weeks.

The vertebral artery dissection that caused Drew’s stroke is a relatively uncommon but serious vascular event that can occur suddenly. Such dissections can result from trauma, though they sometimes occur spontaneously. Early recognition and treatment, as occurred in Drew’s case, significantly improve outcomes and reduce the risk of long-term disability.

As the leader of a fellow Caribbean nation, Drew’s health situation is of direct concern to the region’s political and diplomatic community. His recovery and return to full capacity will be closely watched by other Caribbean governments and citizens, particularly given the interconnected nature of regional governance and trade relationships.
