A 43-year-old businesswoman from Orange Hill in Brown’s Town, St Ann, is now facing the courts after being charged in connection with an alleged fraud scheme spanning 2023 and 2024. According to Jamaica Observer, Snovia Campbell is accused of collecting fees from three separate individuals under the promise of arranging US work-and-travel opportunities and visa appointment services.
The complainants reportedly paid Campbell a combined total of US$3,600 and J$161,000 for these services, but neither received the promised arrangements nor were they refunded their money. After losing contact with Campbell and discovering she was in police custody, the three victims filed complaints with law enforcement and provided formal statements.
Following her interview with police, Campbell was charged with three counts each of obtaining property by means of false pretence, fraudulent conversion, possession of criminal property, and engaging in a transaction involving criminal property. Her court appearance date is currently being scheduled as the case moves through Jamaica’s legal system.
Work-and-travel visa schemes have become a common target for fraud operators in Jamaica and across the Caribbean, where demand for overseas employment and travel opportunities remains high among residents seeking economic advancement.
This case reflects a persistent vulnerability in Caribbean communities where residents seeking legitimate overseas employment and travel opportunities are targeted by fraudsters. The scheme highlights the risks faced by Jamaicans and other Caribbean nationals attempting to navigate complex US visa and work permit processes, often turning to intermediaries who may not be legitimate.
