Armed suspect injured in exchange of gunfire near New Green roundabout; woman and children rescued unharmed.
A dramatic confrontation unfolded in Mandeville on Sunday when police intercepted a Toyota Premio motor car near the New Green roundabout, according to reporting from the Jamaica Observer. The driver of the vehicle reportedly fled and opened fire on officers, triggering an exchange of gunfire that left the suspect wounded.
The incident occurred around 1:30 pm, with the armed man sustaining injuries during the firefight before running from the scene. He subsequently collapsed near the hard shoulder on the Winston Jones Highway and was transported to hospital for medical treatment.
Residents reported that a woman and two children who were in the suspect’s vehicle were safely removed and emerged unharmed from the encounter. The police operation resulted in the recovery of a substantial quantity of firearms from the scene.
Following the incident, authorities cordoned off the area and implemented traffic diversions to manage the disruption. Motorists were redirected through alternative routes including Kendal Road, Sugar Research, Ingleside, Hanbury, and Caledonia Road to Williamsfield via Royal Flat, allowing normal traffic flow to resume in the region.
Mandeville, located in Manchester Parish, is Jamaica’s fourth-largest city and a key commercial hub in the island’s interior. The New Green roundabout serves as a major traffic intersection in the area.
This incident reflects ongoing public safety challenges in Jamaica’s interior parishes, a concern that resonates with diaspora communities monitoring conditions in their home country and affects residents’ daily mobility and security.
