Kane Breaks Drought to Steer Bayern Past Promoted Elversberg

England striker nets first goal of season as defending champions edge past German newcomers in tight Bundesliga contest.

Harry Kane finally found the back of the net in Bayern Munich’s 2-1 win over SV Elversberg on Sunday, breaking a scoring drought that had extended through the defending champions’ opening two matches of the season. Captaining the side in place of rested goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, Kane struck decisively in the 72nd minute to break a deadlock and secure three points in what he described as a challenging away fixture.

Bayern took an early lead through teenage German winger Lennart Karl, who tapped in a cross intended for Kane after 26 minutes. However, Elversberg responded impressively, with Maurice Krattenmacher levelling the match just after the hour mark with a curling effort from the edge of the box. The hosts had earlier seen an effort from American forward Cole Campbell ruled out for offside.

Kane’s composed finish in a crowded penalty area proved decisive, and the England captain reflected on his return to goalscoring form in comments to DAZN. According to the Jamaica Observer’s report, Kane acknowledged the frustration of his early-season drought while emphasizing the importance of securing the victory at what he called a tough venue. Bayern’s performance suggested room for improvement, with Kane noting the team had “probably haven’t reached our top level yet.”

The defeat marked a sobering comedown for Elversberg, who had opened their historic first Bundesliga campaign with two consecutive victories. The club from a town of just 13,000 represents the smallest municipality ever to compete in Germany’s top division. Coach Vincent Wagner received a pre-match boost when he was cleared to take his place in the dugout following a successful appeal against a red card from Elversberg’s thrilling 4-3 victory at Borussia Moenchengladbach the previous week.

Elversberg’s promotion to the Bundesliga represents a remarkable achievement for a club from one of Germany’s smallest towns. Their strong start to the season—winning their first two matches—had captured attention before Bayern’s visit. Bayern Munich, as defending champions, entered the match seeking to maintain their position atop German football despite Kane’s early-season struggles in front of goal.
