An 18-year-old pleaded guilty to robbing a Barbadian man and was sentenced to time served before being transferred to immigration authorities.
A Jamaican teenager has been transferred to Barbados immigration officials following his guilty plea to a robbery charge, according to reporting by Barbados Today. Jahuan Jason Haniff, 18, initially denied the offence and spent five months in remand before appearing before the No. 2 District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court to reconsider his position.
The incident occurred on June 28, 2025, when the victim, Carlos Edwards, was walking along Hope’s Alley on his way home. According to prosecutor Sergeant Kenmore Phillips, Edwards felt a sudden pain between his neck and shoulder, stumbled forward, and then felt someone searching through his pocket before a wallet was removed and the person fled the scene. Edwards reported the robbery to police.
On July 4, 2025, officers spotted Haniff walking along Pinfold Street and conducted a search that recovered Edwards’ ATM card in his possession. Haniff was arrested, taken to Central Police Station, gave a statement, and guided officers back to the scene where he admitted to the offence. The stolen items included a wallet, a CIBC debit card valued at $20, and $40 in cash.
Acting Magistrate Shakieda Sealy sentenced Haniff to time served, reflecting the months he had already spent in custody. After it was confirmed that Haniff had no immigration status in Barbados and had not initiated any legal residency process, he was handed over to Immigration authorities for deportation proceedings.
The case reflects ongoing crime concerns in Barbados, with robbery remaining a persistent issue in the jurisdiction. The swift identification and apprehension of the suspect through recovered evidence demonstrates police investigative work in the matter.
The case highlights cross-border crime and immigration enforcement within the Caribbean region, illustrating how island nations manage criminal matters involving non-citizens and deportation procedures.
