Jamaica Puts AI and Digital Innovation Front and Centre During Tourism Awareness Week

The island nation will explore how artificial intelligence and technology can reshape tourism while keeping the human experience at its core.

Jamaica is positioning itself at the forefront of tourism innovation by dedicating Tourism Awareness Week 2026 to exploring how artificial intelligence and digital transformation can reshape the nation’s tourism sector. According to the Jamaica Observer, the week runs from September 27 to October 3 under the theme “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism,” mirroring the UN Tourism’s global theme for World Tourism Day.

The Ministry of Tourism has outlined an ambitious agenda to examine how technology is changing the way travellers discover, plan and experience destinations. The week will highlight Jamaica’s efforts to responsibly deploy AI and digital tools to strengthen destination management, improve visitor facilitation, develop the tourism workforce, build resilience and enhance decision-making across the sector.

Minister of Tourism Edmund Bartlett emphasized that the timing is critical as technology continues to reshape global travel. He noted that Jamaica must not merely respond to technological change but help shape it. “Tourism Awareness Week 2026 gives us an opportunity to look closely at how artificial intelligence and digital technology can strengthen our tourism industry while ensuring that people remain at the heart of the experience,” Bartlett stated, according to the Jamaica Observer. The ministry’s technology adoption is part of the broader Tourism 3.0 growth agenda aimed at making tourism a more powerful engine for national economic transformation.

Director of Tourism Donovan White stressed that technological advancement must enhance rather than replace Jamaica’s distinctive appeal. “Technology must enhance, not replace, the Jamaica experience. Our hospitality, authenticity, creativity and human connection remain central to what visitors come here to experience,” White said. He highlighted that AI should be leveraged to deepen the meaningfulness of the visitor experience.

The week’s programming begins on September 27 with a Thanksgiving Church Service in Montego Bay, followed by a Speaker Series at Tourism Action Club schools on September 28-29 and October 1-2. A Tourism AI Youth Forum will take place on September 30, and the week concludes with the Hospitality & Tourism: AI in Tourism Workshop on October 1, hosted by the Tourism Enhancement Fund through the Jamaica Centre for Tourism Innovation.

Tourism Awareness Week is an annual observance in Jamaica that coincides with the UN’s World Tourism Day on September 27. The event provides a platform for stakeholders to examine critical issues affecting the tourism sector and to promote awareness of tourism’s role in Jamaica’s economy and society.

Jamaica’s strategic focus on AI and digital transformation in tourism offers a model for other Caribbean nations seeking to modernize their tourism industries while preserving the cultural authenticity and human warmth that define Caribbean hospitality. The initiative demonstrates how Caribbean destinations can leverage technology to enhance competitiveness in global tourism markets without sacrificing the distinctive character that attracts visitors to the region.
