Highway 2A Resurfacing Work Kicks Off This Week in St. Thomas

Overnight paving project to close southbound lane for three weeks starting Tuesday evening.

The Ministry of Transport and Works has partnered with B & R Infrastructure Limited to resume paving operations on Highway 2A, specifically the Ronald Mapp section stretching from the St Thomas Roundabout to the Bucks Road junction. According to Barbados Today, work commenced on Tuesday, September 22, and will run during nighttime hours from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., with an expected completion timeframe of three weeks, weather permitting.

The project will reduce the highway to a single lane during work periods. The southbound lane will be closed entirely, forcing southbound traffic to divert at the St Thomas Roundabout, while the northbound lane remains operational. Emergency vehicles, public service vehicles, and area residents will maintain free passage throughout the construction period.

Motor vehicle operators are advised to reduce speed when approaching the worksite and to consider using alternate routes where feasible. The authorities have also urged drivers to exercise caution within the construction zone and to follow the guidance of flag persons and posted signage. Both the Ministry and the contractor expressed appreciation for the public’s patience, noting that the improvements form part of broader efforts to enhance Barbados’ road infrastructure.

Highway maintenance and infrastructure improvements are ongoing priorities for Barbados’ transport sector. The Ministry of Transport and Works regularly coordinates with private contractors to execute road rehabilitation projects across the island, often scheduling work during off-peak hours to minimize disruption to daily traffic flow.

Road infrastructure maintenance directly affects daily life for Barbadians and the broader Caribbean, influencing commute times, business operations, and emergency response capabilities. Well-maintained highways are essential for economic activity and public safety across island nations.
