The Ministry of Home Affairs has opened tenders for scanning room construction at New Amsterdam and Lusignan prisons as part of broader correctional system modernization.
The Guyanese government is moving forward with significant infrastructure upgrades to its prison system, announcing tender awards for the construction of two scanning facilities designed to enhance security operations. According to Kaieteur News, the Ministry of Home Affairs has allocated approximately $138.5 million for these projects, which represent a key component of the nation’s broader correctional modernization agenda.
The New Amsterdam Prison facility in Region Six will receive a scanning room estimated at $57.3 million, drawing interest from 22 construction contractors vying for the contract. Meanwhile, the Lusignan Prison project on the East Coast of Demerara carries a higher price tag of $81.2 million, with 21 companies submitting competitive bids. Both projects were opened through the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board, with detailed bid information now in the public record.
These scanning room installations are part of a larger government commitment to prison system transformation. The Guyanese government has earmarked $6 billion in this year’s budget specifically for correctional facility improvements, signaling an ambitious effort to establish what officials describe as a modern correctional institution. The scanning technology is expected to enhance security protocols and operational efficiency across both facilities.
Guyana’s prison system has been undergoing gradual modernization efforts in recent years. The government’s substantial $6 billion budget allocation for correctional infrastructure improvements demonstrates a commitment to upgrading security measures and facility standards across multiple prison locations, including facilities in Regions Four, Six, and Seven.
As a Caribbean nation investing in criminal justice infrastructure, Guyana’s prison modernization efforts reflect regional trends toward enhanced security and rehabilitation standards. The scale of investment and competitive bidding process may offer lessons for other Caribbean jurisdictions considering similar correctional facility upgrades.
