The former film mogul faces a reduced sentence following a successful appeal and retrial in New York.
The 74-year-old Weinstein appeared in a Manhattan courthouse on Wednesday for resentencing in connection with the 2006 sexual assault of Miriam Haley, a former production assistant. According to AFP, he was convicted of forcibly performing oral sex on Haley, one of dozens of women who have accused the “Pulp Fiction” and “Shakespeare in Love” producer of abuse.
Weinstein’s legal journey has been marked by reversals and retrials. He received a 23-year sentence in 2020, but that conviction was overturned on appeal in 2024. A jury found him guilty again following a retrial in 2025, leading to Wednesday’s resentencing at 15 years—less than prosecutors had sought. Prosecutors had requested a 20-year term, while Weinstein’s legal team argued that a longer sentence would likely result in his death in prison. The former mogul, who now uses a wheelchair due to health issues, appealed for leniency in court, stating “I am not a violent man, have some mercy” and offering an apology to those he had hurt.
Haley, present in the courtroom, described the lasting impact of Weinstein’s actions. According to the source reporting, she told the court that she had endured a “life sentence” and post-traumatic stress disorder following the assault. She emphasized that Weinstein had “abused his position of power” and expressed her distress that he had deemed her “so insignificant” that he felt emboldened to commit such an act.
Weinstein’s fall from power has been precipitous. Once a kingpin capable of making or breaking Hollywood careers and projects, investigations by The New Yorker and The New York Times exposed widespread abusive behaviour and prompted allegations from more than 80 people. The resulting public outcry catalyzed the global #MeToo movement, which fundamentally altered how the entertainment industry addresses sexual misconduct and abuse of power.
Additional legal troubles persist for Weinstein. He faces resentencing in California for a 2013 rape and assault conviction, after an appeals court upheld the conviction but vacated his 16-year sentence in June. In New York, a judge declared a mistrial in May in a separate case involving actor Jessica Mann after jurors could not reach a verdict. This marked the third time Mann testified against Weinstein—his 2020 conviction in her case was overturned due to witness mishandling, and a 2025 retrial ended in mistrial following jury-room discord. Prosecutors have indicated they will not pursue a fourth trial in Mann’s case.
Weinstein’s prominence in Hollywood was built over decades as a producer of acclaimed films. His alleged misconduct, first exposed publicly through investigations by major news outlets in 2017, became the catalyst for the #MeToo movement, which prompted widespread reckoning across entertainment, media, politics, and other industries regarding sexual harassment and assault.
