A 43-year-old former police special constable in Guyana has received a one-year prison sentence following his guilty plea to weapons violations, according to reporting from Kaieteur News. Errol De Florimonte was arrested on February 10, 2026, at Eccles on the East Bank Demerara with an unlicensed firearm and ammunition in his possession.

De Florimonte appeared before Senior Magistrate Dylon Bess at Diamond Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, where he pleaded guilty to both charges related to the illegal weapons. The court imposed identical one-year sentences for possession of a firearm without a licence and possession of ammunition without a licence, with both terms to run concurrently.

The case underscores ongoing concerns about illegal firearms circulating in Guyana. The conviction of a former law enforcement officer adds particular weight to the matter, raising questions about weapons accountability within security force ranks and the broader challenge of controlling unlicensed arms in the country.

Guyana has faced persistent challenges with illegal firearms and ammunition trafficking. The case reflects the judicial system’s approach to enforcing weapons licensing requirements across all segments of society, including former and current law enforcement personnel.

Illegal firearms remain a significant public safety concern across the Caribbean region. The prosecution of a former police officer in Guyana demonstrates the judiciary’s commitment to holding all citizens—regardless of prior law enforcement status—accountable for weapons violations, a principle relevant to security and rule of law throughout the Caribbean.
