Canadian Chef Sentenced for Operating Deadly Online Poison Business

Kenneth Law pleaded guilty to aiding 14 suicides after selling lethal substances to hundreds worldwide through online forums.

Kenneth Law, a former luxury hotel chef in Toronto, operated an online poison business that claimed lives across the globe before his arrest in 2023. According to reporting from the Jamaica Observer citing court proceedings, Law pleaded guilty in May 2026 to aiding in the suicide of 14 people in Canada after prosecutors determined insufficient evidence existed to pursue murder convictions. The sentencing hearing in Newmarket, Ontario, drew relatives of victims who delivered emotional impact statements describing the irreversible loss caused by Law’s actions.

Law’s operation reached at least 41 countries and generated substantial revenue through the sale of sodium nitrite, a meat preservative with lethal properties when ingested. Court documents revealed he shipped approximately 330 packages to the United Kingdom alone, typically charging around $80 per order. The Jamaica Observer reported that Law actively recruited customers by appearing on suicide discussion forums under assumed names, offering advice on how to use the substances and positioning himself as fulfilling a humanitarian need.

Families of victims expressed profound anguish during the hearing. Maria Lopez, mother of 18-year-old Jeshennia Bedoya-Lopez who died in 2022, stated through prosecutors: “I cannot stop thinking that my little girl will never come back.” Other relatives described how grief had fundamentally altered their lives, with one sister noting she was “no longer the same person” after her brother’s death. Leonardo Bedoya, the father of one victim, called the decision to drop murder charges “a disgrace,” telling reporters he discovered his daughter dead in her bedroom.

Despite the guilty plea to aiding suicide rather than murder, legal experts anticipated prosecutors would seek a substantial sentence, potentially reaching 20 years. Judge Michelle Fuerst allocated four days to hear victim impact statements and evidence before determining the final sentence. In prison interviews with a psychiatrist following his guilty plea, Law reportedly maintained he viewed himself as blameless, claiming he was “just trying to serve a need that I thought was humane” and insisting he did not make the final decision for anyone to end their life.

Kenneth Law launched his online suicide forums during the COVID-19 pandemic, transitioning from his work as a chef at a downtown Toronto luxury hotel. He was arrested in 2023 after authorities uncovered his international operation. In May 2026, he pleaded guilty to 14 counts of aiding suicide after prosecutors determined they lacked sufficient evidence to secure murder convictions, though they maintained he bore responsibility for facilitating deaths across multiple jurisdictions.
