Tomatoes and lettuce hit record highs as climate shifts squeeze agricultural supplies across Jamaica.
Food costs at Kingston’s Coronation Market have reached new heights this week as drought conditions continue to squeeze agricultural supplies across Jamaica, according to reporting from the Jamaica Observer. The price increases are particularly steep for fresh produce: lettuce is commanding $1,500 per pound, Scotch bonnet peppers $700 per pound, sweet peppers $600 per pound, and both carrots and tomatoes $500 per pound. Root vegetables including onions, sweet potatoes, and Irish potatoes are each priced around $400 per pound.
Andre Barnaby of the Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation identified climate change and shifting weather patterns as the primary drivers of the market volatility. Speaking on the Jamaica Observer’s Market Bag program, Barnaby explained that unpredictable seasonal variations have created a cycle of feast and famine for local farmers—periods of large yields followed by severe shortages that directly impact both supply and pricing.
The squeeze on food availability reflects broader challenges facing Jamaica’s agricultural sector as climate patterns become increasingly erratic, affecting not only what reaches market shelves but also the purchasing power of consumers already navigating inflationary pressures.
Jamaica’s Coronation Market in downtown Kingston is the island’s primary wholesale and retail produce hub, serving as a barometer for food price trends affecting households across the country. The market has long reflected the health of Jamaica’s agricultural sector and broader economic conditions.
Rising food costs directly impact Caribbean households already managing inflation and wage stagnation. Jamaica’s experience mirrors challenges across the region where climate volatility and agricultural vulnerability have made food security an urgent policy concern for governments and families alike.
