A young businessman lost his life in a brazen daylight shooting in Princes Town on Sunday afternoon, marking the second violent attack on him in as many years. According to the Trinidad Guardian, Shyam Balla, 23, of Sixth Company in Indian Walk, was fatally shot while his father sustained injuries during an assault at their business premises around 1:30 pm.
Police accounts indicate that two masked gunmen scaled the fence of the business and confronted both men before opening fire. Balla was struck multiple times, including in the chest, while his father was shot in the arm. A passerby transported both men to a health facility, where Balla was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The killing carries added weight given Balla’s history of violence. In September 2023, he survived a shooting at his previous business, S&R Tyre Shop, located on Bridal Road in Cunupia. That incident prompted him to relocate his operations to Princes Town, a move that ultimately proved insufficient to shield him from further harm. Investigators are continuing efforts to establish a motive for the fatal shooting, though the pattern of repeated attacks suggests possible criminal targeting.
Trinidad and Tobago has experienced persistent challenges with violent crime, including targeted killings of business owners and entrepreneurs. The circumstances surrounding Balla’s case—a second attack within three years—underscore the vulnerability some business operators face in the twin-island nation.
This incident reflects the broader security challenges affecting Caribbean business communities, particularly in Trinidad and Tobago, where entrepreneurs face heightened risks of violent crime that can disrupt livelihoods and claim lives.
