Three Jamaican secondary schools strengthened their positions in the ISSA daCosta Cup football competition after securing victories in Wednesday’s second-round matches. Lacovia High maintained their lead atop Group 2 with nine points following a 3-2 home win over Central High, while McGrath High and Manning’s School also advanced with commanding performances.
McGrath High dominated Morant Bay High 6-2, with Jim Mitchell accounting for four of the goals. Manning’s School claimed the top spot in Group 6 with a 2-0 victory over St James High in Savanna-la-Mar, with an own goal opening the scoring in the 63rd minute and Jarvis Maylor adding the second.
Defending champions St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) demonstrated resilience by overcoming a one-goal deficit to beat Irwin High 2-1. After Rajaie Parnell gave Irwin the lead in the 29th minute, STETHS equalized from a penalty kick in the 37th minute when goalkeeper Javaughn Earle fouled a STETHS player. Shyon George secured the comeback victory just before halftime when Earle failed to hold a low shot.
Glenmuir High delivered a dominant performance, overwhelming Ferncourt High 9-0, with Orel Miller scoring six goals. The victory moved Glenmuir to second place in Group 2, two points behind Lacovia.
Elsewhere, Kemps Hill High and Ocho Rios High each dropped points after drawing 1-1 with St Mary High and BB Coke High respectively. Ten-man Rusea’s High climbed into second place in their group with a 3-1 victory over William Knibb Memorial, while Manchester High recovered from an earlier loss to edge Lennon High 1-0.
The ISSA daCosta Cup is Jamaica’s premier secondary school football competition. St Elizabeth Technical High School are the defending champions, having won the title in the previous season.
