New York Mayor Demands Trump Withdraw ICE After Bronx Shooting Incident

Tensions escalate in New York City as Mayor Zohran Mamdani calls for federal immigration agents to leave the city following a confrontation that left a man injured.

Tensions flared in New York City on Thursday after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer shot a man during an operation in the Marble Hill section of the Bronx, prompting the city’s Democratic mayor to take an unusually confrontational stance toward the Trump administration.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced he would demand that President Donald Trump withdraw all ICE enforcement operations from New York City. In a statement posted to social media, Mamdani described the shooting as “unconscionable and incredibly serious,” noting that a five-year-old child was present in the vehicle at the time of the altercation. “I will not stand by while ICE agents terrorize our communities,” the mayor declared, according to reporting from AFP.

The Department of Homeland Security characterized the operation as an attempt to apprehend a person with a criminal history, citing prior convictions for grand larceny and multiple arrests related to assault, robbery, and weapons possession. The agency confirmed that the individual targeted was from the Dominican Republic. However, the DHS initially claimed gang associations before issuing a revised statement that removed that reference. The agency stated that the person remained alive and was receiving treatment at a local hospital, though it did not clarify how many officers discharged weapons or explain the circumstances that led to the shooting.

The incident drew hundreds of peaceful protesters to the scene Thursday evening, with many later gathering at the hospital where the victim was being treated. Tensions escalated when some demonstrators attempted to block vehicles from leaving the facility, prompting law enforcement to establish barriers and move protesters away from the entrance.

Governor Kathy Hochul called for a “full and transparent accounting” of the incident, while Murad Awawdeh, president of the New York Immigration Coalition, demanded an investigation, release of body camera footage, and accountability for any excessive force. This shooting marks another high-profile incident involving ICE this year, following the killing of two U.S. citizens in Minneapolis that sparked widespread protests.

Notably, the relationship between Mamdani and Trump has warmed considerably since the president took office in January, despite Trump’s earlier public criticism of the mayor. New York, a Democratic stronghold, maintains a policy prohibiting its police force from assisting with federal immigration enforcement operations.

ICE has been a focal point of controversy under Trump’s administration as the agency intensifies immigration enforcement operations across the United States. New York City, as a sanctuary jurisdiction, has historically resisted cooperation with federal immigration authorities and maintains strict policies limiting local police involvement in immigration matters.

The incident involves a person identified as being from the Dominican Republic, connecting the story to Caribbean migration patterns and the broader impact of U.S. immigration enforcement on Caribbean nationals and diaspora communities. The shooting underscores ongoing tensions between Caribbean immigrants and U.S. federal authorities that resonate with Caribbean audiences and diaspora members navigating the American immigration system.
