Trump Administration Bars CNN, MSNBC, Politico From White House Access

US President cites ‘fake news’ reporting as outlets face unprecedented restrictions on coverage.

US President Donald Trump announced Friday that three major news outlets—CNN, MSNBC, and Politico—would be barred from White House access effective immediately. According to AFP reporting, Trump made the announcement via his Truth Social network, stating he was “proud” to take the action against what he characterized as “Fake News” organizations.

The president accused the outlets of consistently reporting false information but did not specify which stories or reporting prompted the ban. Trump suggested that additional news organizations would face similar restrictions, though he declined to name them. He framed the decision as necessary to prevent media outlets from publishing “fiction and lies” about his administration and the country.

While complete bans on news outlets from White House premises remain exceptionally uncommon in US presidential history, Trump’s second administration has implemented increasingly strict controls over press access. The administration now determines which journalists can join the “pool” of reporters permitted in restricted spaces such as the Oval Office and Air Force One.

Precedent for such actions exists but is limited. During his first term, Trump barred a CNN reporter from certain events. Former President Richard Nixon imposed restrictions on the Washington Post during the Watergate scandal. More recently, Trump’s administration barred The Associated Press from some events last year over the news agency’s continued use of “Gulf of Mexico” rather than “Gulf of America,” the latter being Trump’s preferred designation.

Trump’s relationship with mainstream media outlets has been contentious throughout his political career. His first administration saw frequent clashes with press organizations over access and coverage, and his second term has continued this pattern with more formalized restrictions on which journalists can cover presidential events.
